Diggy Signs with Atlantic: Lessons Learned from Diggy vs. JoJo

First he drops this viral video:
Then he announced today via Twitter that he was taking a tour of Atlantic Records and that the signing was official. Some people are gonna hate, but I can’t be mad at him. He’s a shining example of what can happen when you combine talent and creativity with hard work.
This can easily be seen when comparing Diggy to his brother JoJo. When I saw that Diggy video I was amazed and asked my Twitter crew if the family talent skipped over JoJo. I think @ChristinaFaith summed it up best in her reply: “Hard work skipped over JoJo.”
There’s something to be said for hard work. Just look at what JoJo did when he was pursuing his career on “Run’s House.” From what the public saw, it looked like he wanted everything handed to him. He expected a top-notch deal without having a track record. He wasted time in the studio. He didn’t even take full advantage of the hookups his dad got him, like tracks from producer Rockwilder. It seemed like he was more into living the life than building an actual career.
Now look at what Diggy has been doing. He’s been working hard on his blog, Life of the Jetsetter, since January 2009 to create a culture and lifestyle around his music. He’s put out a mixtape. He’s aligned himself with the right people and picked great role models (check his blog’s sidebar). He’s determined to be a trendsetter, not just another rapper.
So, artists and music industry hopefuls, there’s a lesson to be learned here. Don’t fall in love with the “music video/MTV Cribs” lifestyle and all of its trappings. Instead, focus on being an artist and making something original. It’s the difference between signing a major label deal and disappearing into artist oblivion.
Anymore lessons that we can learn from comparing Diggy’s work ethic to Jojo’s? Let me know in the comments!
