You Should Listen To: Gary Go

by AKB on August 29, 2009

I don’t know why it took so long for me to find out about this guy, but Gary Go is now officially on my radar.  The British pop-rock singer’s song “Wonderful” was the featured free download on iTunes a couple of weeks ago. I normally download the free songs to check new things out, but this is the first time I’ve actually BOUGHT THE ALBUM from the promotion.

After hearing “Wonderful” and buying the album I did some more research on the guy.  Turns out, he uses technology in some interesting ways for both his creative process (his Wikipedia article lists the iPhone as one of his instruments) and his marketing.  Case in point:

Gary Go has gained publicity for his unconventional use of Twitter, and the iPhone for songwriting. ‘The Heart Balloon’ was conceived on the iPhone after uploading an image of a Heart Shaped balloon entangled with a tree; Go then asked his Twitter friends to send in lyric suggestions. The track was given away as a free download to raise money and awareness for the British Heart Foundation with all proceeds going to the charity. Gary Go has also performed special shows at Apple stores in London and New York playing tracks from his album on the iPhone and describing how he put together future track ‘Superfuture’ using downloaded Apps. The music is pretty good.  Besides Wonderful, other stand-out tracks include Open Arms, Brooklyn, Just Dance (yep…a cover of Lady GaGa’s song), and Drive.  Check out Wonderful below and visit his site.  Coming from an Urban/Pop perspective, I’ll be listening to his album when I’m looking to draw inspiration from that Coldplay-esque vibe. He’s definitely someone to look out for.
